Summary of Mobile Worker Management - FAQ (The following questions will be answered)
Q: How Do You Manage Employees That You Don't See On A Daily Basis? A: One way would be to have them sign in everyday in the form of an email or phone call. Occasionally, you'll have to few that say, the network was down, or they couldn't call because there wasn't any coverage in their area. Even if it's true, they can't use the same excuse every week. Assignments that are given have to be verified, and resolved on time, every time. If there's enough time given to complete the assignment, then there can't be an excuse. When the Network goes down, they need to have an alternate method of connecting. Either by standard computer or another location that has a connection. Another option is to have them take a photograph of themselves to prove that they really are where they say they are. If at least, they are where they're supposed to be, you can check to verify the story with someone else in the area. It may seem strict, but keep in mind that they must agree to some kind of verification if they're to continue working with mobile freedom. Anyone that refuses can be replaced by someone else that agrees, and follows the rules. | Q: Since They Don't Have To Report Physically, How Do You Deal With Attendance Issues? A: Missing in action? This may seem simple to figure out, but not always. In the beginning, reliability is a primary concern for anyone that you hire. Disappearing for half a day is unacceptable. An evaluation period of at least a month would help. Have the person call, email, or sign in to a webpage and perform a simple task everyday, without fail, for a month to see if they can do it. It doesn't make sense to be reliable only half or 80% of the time. A real assignment may last up to a year, so one month out of their lives to prove themselves, can't be too much of a bother. In the end they'll be judged and hired by their results. After the evaluation, constant periodic and checks will ensure that they don't decide to take advantage of the situation and begin making excuses. Employees working outside of the office should be held to a higher standard than those working indoors. They have a lot of free time, but only if the assignment is done as requested. | Q: What If An Assignment Is Not Completed Because of Traffic, or Personal Issues ? A: Just like every other occupation in life, we have to take responsibility for the things we do and actions we take. Completed assignments are also a priority, since you may never be able to verify that it was done. Once again this is the main reason for the evaluation. It's not only for attendance and dependability. The employees’ ability to resolve issues and complete assignments is also put to the test. Those unable to find alternative ways to get the job done can't be hired as a Mobile Worker. Sometimes the assignment requires more research and additional time spent looking for solution. Since there's no Co-Worker or Manager there is assist with a problem that may arise, this person has to be able to resolve it on their own. There's no time off with a job like this, because you’re already in a position to take personal time. A day off, is also not logical, since there may be some days when there isn't any work for them to do. Those idle periods when they have no assignment, is when they should take care of their personal business. | Q: What Kind Of Pay-Scale Can You Use To Decide How Much To Pay Mobile Workers? A: This is something that depends on the type of Assignment that has to be done. Pay by the hour is not advisable, since this is a mobile worker with the freedom to work or not work until an assignment is available. The same goes for weekly payments. If one day is worked, when another is not, then you can expect some type of issue concerning payment, even though there was no actual work done, or not enough to validate payment for almost nothing. If you pay by the assignment, then one assignment may deserve more pay for additional work done, or time spent on it. The only logical solution that makes sense is to pay by performance. What this means is... Basic Payments begin low, and then based on the quality and value of the assignment done, the employees payment will increase over time. Going back to the original evaluation, this performance is based on results alone. If the work is not being completed, you'll be the second one that knows it. The employee knows what they did, and if they didn't do what they're suppose to do, then either a reduction in pay or termination has to be the result. There can't be any second chances, with a job this easy. Workers should be considered Freelance. And just like any other Freelance business, payment is for Services Rendered and complete. Not for trying and failing. | Q: How Do I Keep My Companies Information Secure With Mobile Workers ? A: Ensure that you develop a directive that describes certain Classified Information as "Need to know". Company information cannot be given out freely to any Mobile Worker that asks for it. If they don't need the information to complete their working assignment, then you shouldn't give it to them. You should actually design the assignments so that they don't require any additional information. If you do have workers that need access to classified information, they have to undergo a complete background investigation, to satisfy security concerns. Even after that, there's always a chance that a reliable employee could turn against you for financial gain. Keep track of which employees have sensitive information and have them sign a Contract. The Contract should be carefully worded, and state that whatever information they have, if it's not used for the benefit of your company can result in Criminal Prosecution. As mentioned before, this kind of contract may not be comfortable for most employees. And in any case, choose carefully who you give Classified Information to. In the end, there are no real guarantees of security. The best you can do is monitor and investigate any actions that seem suspicous, or go against your companies policies. | Q: Find Out If My Company Is Eligible To Hire Mobile Workers ?
